Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The Jubilee Year has certainly been full of surprises for the Church, the Archdiocese and for many of us. And it is not over yet! Who would have thought that Pope Francis would not make it all the way to the end of the year he had started, and we would now have a new Pope. I surely didn’t think my life would change so dramatically this year, as I became a bishop and recently your Archbishop. Although, Archbishop’s Pettipas’ retirement was expected, I feel it came so quickly.

God is really full of surprises! It might be frightening and difficult at times, but when I trust in Him, I find that these moments are always full of graces.

I give thanks to all who organized and participated in the deanery farewell celebrations for Archbishop Pettipas this summer and this fall. Every time he came back from one of them, he was so touched by the testimonials he had heard and the love he had received. We wanted this tour to end with a diocesan celebration at the Cathedral on October 4th. Again, thank you for those who participated and all who gave time and talent to make this a beautiful and meaningful event. It was my first celebration as Archbishop of the diocese, the anniversary of the dedication of the Cathedral and a joyous celebration of the Jubilee Year. I am so blessed to be here with you and having had the privilege to experience these great events of the past few months.

Although I became your Archbishop when Pope Leo accepted September 6 as the official retirement date for Archbishop Pettipas, I was absent from the region for most of that month. As a new bishop, I was expected to be in Rome at what is affectionately called “Baby Bishop’s School”, a 10-day formation for newly ordained bishops, held in September of every year. It was a rich time of learning from seasoned bishops and cardinals about different aspects of our new apostolate, and to meet men from all over the world who have just gone through the same life-changing experience. It is in moments like this that we really experience the universality of our Church. The canonisation of Carlo Acutis and Giorgio Frassati on that Sunday just came to confirm that universality even more.

Right after the formation in Rome, I rushed back because the Plenary of the Assembly of Bishops of Canada was going to start in Montreal the next week. There I was able to meet almost all the bishops of our country and learn what the Conference is working on. It is amazing to realize all that is happening in our Church.

Archbishop Gerard Pettipas left for Toronto on October 21, turning a page of history in our Archdiocese. I pray that his health continues to get better and that he will enjoy being in the big city again. We will see him back in the archdiocese often, I am sure.

As the month of October is close to its end, in the Liturgy we look to the end of times and the final return of Christ, before rejoicing to begin a new cycle at Advent, when we prepare to welcome Christ the Child at Christmas.

Through these seasonal letters from my office, I hope to share with you my experiences and priorities as your archbishop. May the Lord bless you in this liturgical end of year and in the new one about to begin. I am looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you and your community better.

Chers frères et sœurs dans le Christ,

L’année jubilaire a certainement été pleine de surprises pour l’Église, pour l’archidiocèse et pour beaucoup d’entre nous. Et elle n’est pas encore terminée! Qui aurait pensé que le pape François nous quitterait avant la fin de l’année qu’il avait inaugurée et que nous aurions maintenant un nouveau pape ? Je ne pensais certainement pas que ma vie changerait aussi radicalement cette année en devenant évêque et récemment votre archevêque. Même si la retraite de Monseigneur Pettipas était prévue, j’ai l’impression qu’elle est arrivée tellement vite.

Dieu est vraiment plein de surprises ! Cela peut parfois être effrayant et difficile, mais quand on lui fait confiance, je trouve que ces moments sont toujours pleins de grâces.

Je remercie tous ceux et celles qui ont organisés et participés aux célébrations d’adieu organisées dans chaque doyenné pour Mgr Pettipas cet été et cet automne. Chaque fois qu’il revenait d’une de ces célébrations, il était très touché par les témoignages qu’il avait entendus et l’amour qu’il avait reçu. Nous voulions que cette tournée se termine par une célébration diocésaine à la cathédrale le 4 octobre. Encore une fois, merci à tous ceux et celles qui ont participé et ont donné de leur temps et partagé leurs talents pour faire de cet événement un moment magnifique et significatif. C’était ma première célébration en tant qu’archevêque du diocèse, l’anniversaire de la consécration de la cathédrale, et une joyeuse célébration de l’année jubilaire. Je suis tellement béni d’être ici avec vous et d’avoir eu le privilège de vivre ces grands événements au cours des derniers mois.

Bien que je sois devenu votre archevêque lorsque le pape Léon a accepté le 6 septembre comme date officielle du départ à la retraite de Mgr Pettipas, je fus absent du diocèse pendant la majeure partie de ce mois. En tant que nouvel évêque, je devais me rendre à Rome pour participer à ce que l’on appelle affectueusement la « l’école pour bébés évêques», une formation de 10 jours pour les évêques nouvellement ordonnés, qui se tient chaque année en septembre. Ce fut un moment riche d’enseignements de la part d’évêques et de cardinaux chevronnés sur différents aspects de notre nouvel apostolat. Ce fut aussi l’occasion de rencontrer des hommes de partout au monde qui venaient de vivre la même expérience bouleversante qu’est l’épiscopat. C’est dans des moments comme celui-ci que nous faisons vraiment l’expérience de l’universalité de notre Église. La canonisation de Carlo Acutis et de Giorgio Frassati ce dimanche-là n’a fait que confirmer encore davantage cette universalité.

Après la formation à Rome, je suis revenu rapidement au pays, car la plénière de l’Assemblée des Évêques du Canada commençait à Montréal la semaine suivante. J’y ai rencontrer presque tous les évêques de notre pays et découvert les nombreux projets de la conférence épiscopale. C’est fascinant de réaliser tout ce qui se passe dans notre Église.

Mgr Gérard Pettipas est parti pour Toronto le 21 octobre, tournant ainsi une page importante de l’histoire de notre archidiocèse. Je prie que sa santé continue de s’améliorer et qu’il se plaira dans la grande ville de Toronto. Je suis sûr que nous le reverrons souvent dans l’archidiocèse.

Alors que le mois d’octobre touche à sa fin, la liturgie nous oriente vers la fin des temps et le retour final du Christ. Cela, tout juste avant de nous réjouir de commencer un nouveau cycle liturgique avec l’Avent qui préparera à accueillir l’Enfant Jésus à Noël.

À travers ces lettres saisonnières, j’espère partager avec vous mes expériences et mes priorités en tant qu’archevêque. Que le Seigneur vous bénisse en cette fin d’année liturgique et pour la nouvelle année qui commence. J’ai hâte de vous rencontrer, de mieux vous connaître, et de découvrir votre communauté.
