Derived from the Latin word for "cloak", the pallium is a mantle of white wool worn over the shoulders and decorated with six small black crosses. It is given to the Pope and Metropolitan Archbishops as a sign of their authority within their diocese. For this reason, Archbishops may only wear the pallium in their respective diocese. The wool for the pallium is supplied by two lambs presented as a tax to the Pope each year on the feast of St. Agnes. The pallium is given personally to each Metropolitan Archbishop by the Holy Father and is a sign of the special link that unites Metropolitan Archbishops with the chief pastor of the Church of Rome.
